Planets in Therapy is the new edition of Greg’s 1996 book Therapeutic Astrology. This highly readable work on psychological astrology describes how to use astrological cycles and symbols in the practice of counseling and psychotherapy. Combining insights from Jungian depth psychology, developmental theory, alchemy and dream symbolism with the precision of planetary transits, progressions, and midpoints, Planets in Therapy offers an inspirational approach to the healing art of astrology.
The book details Dane Rudhyar’s pioneering work in the fields of humanistic and transpersonal astrology. It describes Rudhyar’s philosophy of wholeness and practical application of techniques derived from Rudhyar’s work, focusing on lunation cycles, progressed lunations, and interplanetary transit cycles.

Reviews of Planets in Therapy
“Greg, this is one fine, superbly conceived and written book. The meticulous sensitivity of your presentation is enriched with so much love: for Rudhyar, for our field, for your art, for the eagerness to help others. This is noble feeling, thinking, writing.” — Noel Tyl
“In these pages you will see a practical model for working actively with the astrological energies. The aspect of Greg Bogart’s work which I most admire is that he keeps astrology in its honored place, but he never allows it to trump the power of engaged self-awareness in shaping and transforming planetary influences.” — Steven Forrest
“You are going to totally love this book if you are serious about mastering the art of astrology. And if you have a desire to develop a counseling or clinical practice that fuses astrology with in-depth psychological study of human behavior, don’t miss this chance for enlightenment.” — Michael Lutin
“Consciousness, wisdom, and healing are all achieved through synthesis. In this fine new work, Greg Bogart has given the reader just that—a synthesis of astrology, psychology, and a beautiful panoply of spiritual teachings infused throughout the text. Bogart has also achieved something quite special, an integration of the work and perspective of one of the founding fathers of modern astrology, Dane Rudhyar. Rudhyar lives on through one of his most devoted students in a form that is of benefit to all serious practitioners of our celestial art and science.” — Alan Oken
“This is a rare book, one that reveals the braiding of symbolism and practice with humanism and mastery. Greg’s psychological understanding is wrapped around a spiritual core. He offers stories of healing and transformation distilled into clarifying teachings. As you read this book, your understanding of what astrology can do will deepen and ripple through your own life.” — Lynn Bell
“This book will enrich all readers seeking a grounded, practical astrology. This is the best work yet by one of the best writers in the field.” – Ray Grasse, author of The Waking Dream
“Greg shows therapists how an astrological chart is a symbol for the Self the client can become, while therapy is a means for realizing this potential. His book is a clear and concise introduction to the marriage of astrology and psychotherapy. I recommend it wholeheartedly.” – Bryan Wittine, Ph.D, Jungian psychoanalyst
“I wish this book had been available when I began to study astrology 40 years ago. Fundamental astrological principles are defined with a rare clarity and precision. Bogart’s lifelong dedication to research, active consulting practice, and extensive training in psychotherapeutic disciplines enables him to deliver actionable insights that are truly life-changing. He shares empirical observations about how astrological energies actually operate in our lives. The beginning student will be equipped with all the relevant information to approach a reading. Serious students will deepen their understanding of archetypes-in-action by developing symbolic sight. And professional astrologers will be heartened by Bogart’s unwavering dedication to advancing astrology as a 21st -century healing modality. Written in an entertaining and conversational style, Planets in Therapy is intimate, authentic, and engaging.” Brian Emo
Reviews of the First Edition:
“Therapeutic Astrology is simply one of the finest astrological books I’ve ever seen anywhere. With the current trend back toward more fatalistic, disempowering interpretations of astrological symbolism. I find Bogart’s work especially encouraging.” — Steven Forrest, author of The Inner Sky
“Therapeutic Astrology is an important book, affording readers the smoothest of transitions between psychological methodology and planetary symbolism. Greg Bogart lives and works in both worlds and presents here a knowing treatise that should be essential reading for anyone in the helping professions. Bogart translates astrology into the language of the therapeutic process, clearly and beautifully. Astrologers will be enriched by Bogart’s lucid description of the planets, signs, and astrological houses as symbols of developmental issues. Psychotherapists will gain a fresh confidence in archetypal symbolism, using it quickly and surely to release their analytical creativity. This is an inspiring book bridging two fields, nobly conceived, sensitively crafted, and eminently practical.” — Noel Tyl, author of Prediction in Astrology
“Bogart’s appproach gives astrologers dignity and professionalism. Therapeutic Astrology is an important introduction to the marriage of astrology and psychotherapy. Greg Bogart has advanced the cause of a new discipline which seems destined to shape consciousness in the 21st century.” — Review in Dell Horoscope
“Greg Bogart takes us beyond traditional astrology and even beyond psychological astrology. He offers a much needed vision of how astrologers and therapists can use a transpersonal approach to heal the personality, as a step toward gaining a greater spiritual awareness.” — Demetra George, author of Asteroid Goddesses

Therapeutic Astrology: Conscious and Unconscious Expression of Planets
Through knowledge of astrology we can shape and transform the expression and manifestation of planetary energies. Rather than trying to precisely predict events, we anticipate the tendency of certain archetypal themes or qualities of experience to occur, in accordance with planetary symbolism. To do this, we need to understand different ways the planets typically manifest so we can evolve our ability to express planetary energies in their most evolved forms.
If a person is relatively unconscious, Mars manifests as aggression, fighting, impatience, selfish demands, injuries, or impulsive actions. But when expressed consciously, Mars symbolizes self-assertiveness, energy, motivation, strength, will. Unconscious Neptune manifests as denial, avoidance, escapism, addiction, naiveté, or spaciness. With more consciousness, Neptune manifests as vision, imagination, surrender, contemplation, stillness, openness, innocence and spirituality. The Moon can manifest as moodiness, neediness, emotional insecurity, or more consciously, as tenderness, empathy, sensitivity, caring or others. Unconscious Venus brings attachment to surface appearances, fixation on beauty, fashion, making a good impression. Unconscious Saturn manifests rigidity, fixation on the mundane, strictly conventional attitudes, workaholicism, stodginess, and inability to loosen up. A conscious expression of Saturn takes the form of responsibility, maturity, accomplishment, task orientation, getting things done. Unconscious Sun takes the form of egotism, narcissism, self-centered ness, vanity, pride, while conscious expression of the Sun appears as radiance, self-esteem, creativity and joy. Unconscious Jupiter manifests as dogmatism, gluttony, laziness or ungrounded optimism. Conscious Jupiter is expressed as hopefulness, expansion and planning for the future….
